What You Need Before a NinjaTrader Strategy Will Trade a Single Contract

Automated trading goes wrong at setup far more often than it goes wrong at strategy. Almost all of it is avoidable by having five things in place before the subscription clock starts.

Week One Is a Plumbing Exercise

The failures that ruin a first month of automated trading are dull. A broker connection that was never properly authorised. A platform on the wrong version. A data feed that is delayed rather than real-time. A machine that went to sleep at 2am. None of those are about whether the strategy is any good, and all of them are avoidable before you pay for anything.

So this page is the setup, in the order it needs doing. It applies whether you are buying strategy logic, building your own, or renting access to a system somebody else runs — though the last of those removes two items entirely, which is the single biggest practical difference between the models.

The products ranked below are the ones this applies to. As always: this is a commercial publication, the first entry is connected to its operator, and the disclosure page has the detail.

Because execution happens on the vendor's servers, two of the five requirements below simply do not apply — there is no automation licence tier to buy and no always-on machine to provision. What is left is a NinjaTrader 8 install, a connected futures broker account, and capital in it.

Setup assistance is included rather than sold separately, which is worth using in the first two days rather than the last two. The first week is for confirming orders arrive correctly and the system recovers when a feed drops, not for evaluating whether the strategy makes money.

Why Hexgo stands out

Server-side execution removes the licence tier and the always-on machine from the setup entirely.

Best for

Someone who wants to be trading in days rather than provisioning infrastructure.

Buying the logic means owning the whole stack beneath it. That is a legitimate choice with a real benefit — nothing stops working because a vendor did — but the setup list below applies in full, and so does the maintenance afterwards.

Plan for the platform licence and the always-on machine as permanent monthly lines, not one-off setup tasks.

Why TurnKey Futures Strategies stands out

Nothing about your setup depends on a vendor continuing to exist.

Best for

A trader who would rather own and maintain than rent and depend.

A single strategy running locally is the most tractable version of the local model. There is one thing to install, one thing to configure and one thing to watch, which makes it realistic to actually understand what your automation is doing before you add to it.

The full local checklist still applies: platform licence for automated execution, a machine that stays on, and a real-time data subscription. Confirm all three before comparing its subscription with anything server-side.

Why FBDBot stands out

One strategy is something you can genuinely supervise while you learn the setup.

Best for

A first-time automator who wants to understand each piece before scaling.

Running a portfolio locally means the setup below has to be right, because a marginal configuration that just about works with one strategy tends to fail visibly with four. Get the connection, the licence and the machine solid before adding the second strategy.

It is also the case where staging matters most: start one strategy, watch it through full sessions, then add. Standing up four at once makes any problem impossible to attribute.

Why BeaconLogic E3 stands out

Built for a portfolio, which makes a solid underlying setup non-optional.

Best for

Someone deliberately diversifying who already has one strategy running cleanly.

The Five Requirements, In Order

First, NinjaTrader 8 itself, installed and current. Not NinjaTrader 7 — an add-on written for 8 will not load on 7, and this is the requirement everything else sits on. Settle it before reading any further about a product.

Second, a futures broker account, funded and connected, before your first day rather than on it. The subscription clock starts whether or not your connection works, and a day lost to account paperwork is a day off the refund window. Place one manual order through the connection to prove it is live.

Third, the licence tier that matches where execution happens. Local execution needs NinjaTrader licensed for automation; server-side execution does not, and the free tier covers it. This is the single line that most often makes a cheap product expensive.

Fourth, a real-time data subscription. Automated strategies act on live prices, and a delayed feed produces decisions against prices that have already moved. It is a modest monthly cost and a non-negotiable one.

Fifth, the recommended capital actually present in the account. It is not a fee — it stays yours and you can withdraw it — but the strategy cannot size correctly without it, and traders routinely budget the subscription and forget this line.

What to Do With the Refund Window

Treat it as a setup budget rather than a trial of the strategy. No seven-day window establishes whether an edge exists, and spending it hoping to find out is the most common way to waste one.

What it can definitively establish is that the plumbing works on your setup: strategies install, the broker connection holds, orders go in at the right size with stops attached, and the system recovers cleanly when the data feed drops. Deliberately disconnect the feed once and watch it come back — that single test tells you more about a product than a week of watching it trade.

Run the whole install in the first two days. If something needs support you are then raising it with days in hand rather than hours.

The One Requirement to Settle First

Platform fit. If you are not on NinjaTrader 8 and do not intend to be, nothing else on this page applies to you, and no amount of comparing subscriptions will change that. It costs thirty seconds to confirm and it prevents every other wasted evaluation.

After that, the question that shapes your whole setup is where execution happens. Server-side removes the licence tier and the always-on machine. Local keeps both, permanently, on top of whatever the vendor charges.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need NinjaTrader 8 specifically?

For the products on this page, yes. An add-on compiled for NinjaTrader 8 will not load on NinjaTrader 7, and it is the requirement everything else depends on. Confirm your version before evaluating anything else.

Can I run an automated strategy on my laptop?

Technically yes, practically not well. A strategy executing locally trades only while that machine is awake, connected and not restarting for an update, so a laptop that sleeps will miss orders. That is why local execution usually means renting an always-on server.

Is delayed market data good enough?

No. An automated strategy acts on the price it is given, so a delayed feed produces decisions against prices that have already moved. Real-time CME data is a required monthly line for automated futures trading.

Is the recommended starting capital a fee?

No. It is money that stays in your brokerage account and remains yours, and you can withdraw it. It belongs in the month-one budget because it has to be available for the strategy to size positions correctly, not because it is spent.

How long does setup usually take?

With a server-side product and a broker account already connected, a day or two. With local execution, longer — you are also provisioning a machine, licensing the platform for automation and confirming it survives a restart. Front-load whichever it is, so the refund window is still open if something needs support.
